Character History FAQ
We know that because this game is an alternate universe game that everyone will have questions about how things are being handled in histories. The village overviews are all linked from this post, so if you're having trouble deciding where to put your character, then just look at the village attitudes for the ones that seems to match your character.
Please note that most of this only applies to characters that are 'Native' as every canon character is considered to have 'died' on leaving the game, and will be apped as a fresh character when someone else picks them up. Returnees would have to speak to a mod if they wish to pick up their former version of a canon character.
My character is from the Naruto canon, how much can I change their history?
Some characters, such as the Uchiha brothers and Naruto, will have understandably large changes to their history. They were directly influenced by the events, and this will be taken into account when determining how much is too much. Other characters, such as those from Iwa, would have much smaller changes because most of the changes weren't centered near their country.
Someone played this character before me, can I change the history?
I'm afraid the answer here is 'not exactly'. This is especially true for Naruto natives, because the history that people apply with is going into the history journal for keeps so that other players can plan their own character histories around them. Every character will have an archived page that potential future players can look over.
The list of all existing game histories is here.
Please note you can add to existing histories for a character! This is always welcome no matter what when applying into the game. Just as you can rewrite the history to better suit your tastes... so long as you don't actually remove any events noted in the history as it stands without checking with a mod if it's turned up as relevant in-game.
Using Obito as an example: If no one was playing him and someone was picking him up, he would still have had arguments with his teammates during his recovery. However, the motivations for these could be tweaked so long as all the events still followed the same timeline. Alternately, as nothing might have been mentioned about his relationship with Kakashi, that might be completely open for interpretation for past events.
We promise we'll let you know if you changed too much and give you a chance to change it!
Alternately, if there's an event in the history you just truly dislike, or want to modify, talk to a mod and we'll tell you if it's been applied too heavily in the game itself to change. Often, it can be. We're friendly, we promise, and we'd like to help.
Does the personality section have the same rules as the history section for characters that have been played before?
Because no two people play the character the same way, no. You can change anything in the personality section so long as it still makes sense with the history. We don't want to make things difficult for new players, and we know not everyone envisions their muses the same way.
As an example, before the reboot, we had a previous Kakashi application and personality. They loved the history, but the personality didn't exactly match how they wanted to handle him. Thus, they carefully edited the personality to account for what they felt was the correct development, and subsequently got in because it still made sense.
How do I add to the history after I'm in and have been for a while?
You just send it to the mods for approval and they'll get it added after giving you a yes. If we don't approve the change, we will be sure to explain what about it didn't work.
My character isn't from Naruto, what now?
What parts of your character make your character who they are? Is it a dramatic loss? A happy childhood? Finding a special weapon? Learning magic? A special bond with some creature?
The best part about the Naruto universe is that it can accommodate almost anything. Loss happens in this world. People do have chances at happy peaceful childhoods if they're from the larger villages. Special weapons that have been strangely sealed exist. Magic is easily translatable to jutsu. And that creature thing? Bam, summons.
The versatility of this world is a rather large part of why this game even exists, but if you need help sorting it out, we're more than happy to do that should you contact us.
What kind of limits do I have on skills?
Not everyone is a god-like shinobi. We're sorry, but the world would crumble in hours if everyone was. If your character can already do a lot of god-mode things in their native canon, you can assume that further abilities are probably going to be asked after by the mods and require explaining. This does not mean that we're going to ask you to trim powers to avoid your muse being badass. The Naruto Universe can take a whole lot of god-mode before reaching any real limits. If you're still concerned, ask and we'll tell you if it's too much.
If, on the other hand, you are coming from a canon with no powers at all... say, Death Note. There, there are magic books, but people are just people. Look at the natural aptitudes of your character. Are they smart? Do they like intelligence gathering? Are they into arson?
You can easily find an outlet in the shinobi world for these. Sealing techniques, fire jutsu, or just being really fast and low ranked.
Or, if you just want to have them settle back, no skills required? That's totally okay too. After all, the shinobi world would be built on nothing without their civilian populations, and civilians can definitely have their own way of things.
Is there anything I need to know before I pick a character?
There are a couple world facts to keep in mind, yes! Brace yourself.
I have a bit of backstory written out with another character, what do I do with it?
If the player of the other character agrees, just post it to the
sunshineverse community if it's a log.
Use this header to avoid confusion with normal posts:
If it's a story, you can add it to the main community itself with permission of the other character, using the above header. However, if you don't want to post it officially to the community, and just want to share it, we do have an AO3 group you can post it to here.
If you contact a mod we can swing you an AO3 invitation, if you need one.

There are a couple world facts to keep in mind, yes! Brace yourself.
-Kushina still has the Kyuubi inside her so Naruto isn't a jinchuuriki. Most people in Konoha have no awareness that she has the bijuu.
-The Uchiha clan is spread around the village still and has their police force active. There is no clan Compound, just the lump around the head of the family for the clan holdings.
-Kiri never had their civil war, though they've been on the edge of one for over a decade and things over there are... dicey.
-Yagura was the Mizukage until JUST before the game started and he was assassinated. Bloodline clans still exist in Kiri, even in the shinobi forces.
-Akatsuki is more openly known in the world, and hires missing nin on a contractual basis. It is also known for being a version of ANBU within Rain on behalf of the non-missing nin. It is stationed in Ame. It also has no interest in the Bijuu.
-Ame (Rain) is more open to outside trade instead of being hostile with closed borders.
-Uzushio has been rebuilt. (Anyone with Uzumaki lineage is welcome to roll in over here! Remember the country is too young for you to have been born there and be out of young childhood.) It was founded by Kushina, though she no longer lives there.
-Oto is still a village with science outposts, and it's still in the Land of Rice Paddies, (as he didn't change the name this time). Orochimaru is in charge.
-The Yondaime Kazekage was still alive and in charge of Suna until just before game start. He was not killed by Orochimaru.
-Obito is the Godaime Hokage, appointed there by Minato who is still alive, as is Hiruzen.
-ROOT was mostly disbanded early in Minato's reign as Yondaime, though Danzo does still have a personal guard.
