Oyama Ami

Country/Village: Fire, Konohagakure
Rank: Chunin
Age at Game Start: 12
Birthday: October 17th
Rank: Chunin
Age at Game Start: 12
Birthday: October 17th
Appearance
Due to being born prematurely, Ami is much smaller than other shin obi her age, and appears to be several years younger than she actually is. She is very short and slender, with long blonde hair and large, glass-green eyes, inherited from her mother.
Abilities/Powers
Weapons:
As a fresh-from-the-Academy genin, Ami is skilled in the basics of kunai, shuriken, and wire. She is skilled in trap-making as well, though again it is all based in Academy curriculum, rather than real-life experience.
Body:
Ami is the smallest of her age group, and so made it a personal mission to climb to the top of her class in taijutsu. She only knows the basic forms, and her small frame limits how much power she can put behind her blows, but she is fast and nimble enough to make sure that each blow hits where it hurts the most and she can dodge the strikes that are too strong for her to block. When it comes to other genin, at least.
Jutsu:
She knows the basic E-Rank jutsu that all Academy students are grilled on: Bunshin, Kawarimi, Henge, Nawanuke (Rope Escape), and Kakuremino (Cloth Disguise). Her chakra reserves have been built up to an ‘average’ state, between girls’ and boys’ her age, through practice and training. The only other really notable aspect for her in this category is that she’s slightly faster than normal when it comes to forming hand signs.
Personality
There are two and a half main faces of Ami: Defensive Ami, Unguarded Ami, and as a subset of Unguarded Ami, Dazzled Ami.
The latter two are categories reserved for her family, the Uchiha clan, and the Hokage (who is also an Uchiha). The former is reserved for basically everybody else. however, the true core of Ami is only really shown to the people closest to her, and given her negative reaction towards her classmates' teasing in the past, that basically means her family—and ONLY her family. Deep down, Ami is a hardworking, earnest young girl that nurses bright hopes and dreams for her future. She likes playing with animals—cats the most—building pillow forts, hugs, sweets, and pretty clothes.
But outside of her family, you would have to physically beat that information out of her. She is intensely private about what she perceives to be personal information, most often out of the fear of further teasing. She doesn't understand how to properly respond to unkind taunts, falling back on physical reprisals and blank expressions to muddle through the terrifying tides of social interaction. When she doesn't feel threatened, though, she is faultlessly polite.
In her own way, she is very sheltered, despite the rather cynical outlook she usually displays. She has been touched by personal tragedy early on, but by and large has had the benefit of a loving, nurturing civilian family of moderate wealth to fall back on, which she never takes for granted. Her remaining family is her most precious treasure, and is as much a reason behind her drive to be a kunoichi as her childhood traumas. She wants to protect the generous, loving people who took her in and nurtured her as their own, no matter what.
She has a lot of growing up to do, naturally. But she also needs somebody to remind her to slow down and enjoy being a kid, too.
History
Oyama Ami was born to a first-generation shinobi father, and an immigrant mother.
Which was where the trouble started, really.
Ami’s mother had never been a paragon of health, and her pregnancy was very, very difficult as a result. Ami was born several months premature and her mother was hospitalized for about half a year afterwards, but both mother and child survived. For a time, Ami enjoyed a happy, normal childhood with two loving parents only interrupted by the occasional mission that drew her father away from the village. And around the time she was five, her father went on a mission and only his squad-mates returned.
Ami’s mother was devastated, and her health began to steadily decline. One day about a year later, she was out with her daughter at the market when she suddenly collapsed. It was a traumatizing event for Ami, as the other passers-by made no move to help, but eventually a member of the Military Police arrived and took both Ami and her mother to the hospital. He stayed with Ami as her mother was taken away by the doctors, and several hours afterwards until her cousin was finally found and came to bring her to the textile shop her aunt ran.
Two things came of that day: her mother’s eventual death, after several more months of hospitalization, and her life-long admiration for the Uchiha clan. Ami strove to reach what she considered to be an ideal—the Uchiha clan produced shinobi that were strong, capable, reliable, serious and skilled.
So, she grit her teeth and trained as hard as she could. Her relationship with the other members of her class and general age group was strained, at best; she was the literal runt of the litter, as it turned out, and fought for respect through force rather than friendship. Her friends, as she considered them, were her remaining family, and the stray dogs and cats she fed.
Her ambition drove her up the ranks, until she finally graduated as the Top Rookie of her year.
